Breast Reduction Surgery (Reduction Mammoplasty)

Breast Reduction Surgery, Reduction Mammaplasty by Gregory J. Liebscher, MD, FACS, 5901 Corporate Dr #A, Colorado Springs, CO 80919 (719) 634-2503

Want to safely and comfortably reduce the size of your breasts? Here’s what you should know about breast reduction surgery, a reconstructive procedure for women and men offered by Colorado Springs plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Greg Liebscher:

Many emotional and health problems can be caused by breasts that are larger than they should be for both men and women. Certainly, people may have issues with their self image. But people may also experience significant discomfort and pain in their neck or back caused by the weight and protrusion of their breasts. Additionally, overly large breasts can impair physical activity and the enjoyment of an active lifestyle. Fortunately, the adverse effects of having too large of breasts can be mitigated with breast reduction surgery (or reduction mammoplasty).

Breast reduction surgery is covered by many insurances (check with your provider for coverage details). The procedure is safe and overwhelmingly satisfying. The results are natural-looking and comfortable.

Procedure Details

Breast reduction surgery makes the breast appear firmer and smaller in size by removing the excess tissues and skin from the breast. The surgery usually takes around 3 to 5 hours, without the need to stay overnight in most cases.

During a breast reduction surgery fat, skin, and glandular tissue is removed. This is usually done surgically through incisions in the breast. In some cases, a patient may only need liposuction to remove only fat tissue and preserve glandular tissue. However, and in most cases, when there are large amounts of fat deposit in the breasts, a full surgical breast reduction is required.

Why Breast Reduction Surgery?

This type of surgery is used to remove excess fat and skin from the breasts so that the resulting size is in proportion with the rest of the body. This type of procedure can also eliminate pain caused by the weight of large breasts. Individuals with overly large breasts frequently acquire symptoms such as ‘pain, skin irritation, skeletal deformities, breathing problems, and even headaches.

This surgery is appropriate for both men and women, though men generally undergo this procedure to treat gynecomastia or overdeveloped breasts. While men may not have as much physical pain from large breasts as women, they can experience embarrassment to the point they avoid certain physical activities including intimacy.
