The average age of women who seek breast augmentations is 24, and 90 percent of women have the surgery after having children.

A breast augmentation is simply the surgical placement of breast implants into the body to improve the breasts’ symmetry or increase the projection and fullness of the breasts.

Ideal candidates for implants:

  • For saline implants, women over the age of 18 in good health.
  • For silicone gel implants, women over the age of 22 in good health.
  • Women with naturally small breasts.
  • Women who have lost breast volume due to weight loss, breast-feeding or pregnancy.
  • Women who have asymmetrical breasts or breasts that are disproportionate in shape or size.

Types of breast implants:

  • Saline breast implants:
This type of breast implant is composed of a sterile saltwater solution. This fluid is similar to the human body’s natural fluids. When inserting saline breast implants, the implant is inserted without any saline solution. After the implant is in place, the implant is filled to the desired size via a fill-tube. After the removal of the fill-tube, the implant seals itself automatically.
  • Silicone gel implants:
These types of implants are prefilled to the desired size prior to insertion. Therefore, after the implant is in place, no other steps are required. Many women feel this type of implant appears more like natural breast material than other types of implants.

Women who should not acquire breast implants:

  • Women who are breast-feeding or pregnant.
  • Women who have cancer or pre-cancer and have not completed treatments for their condition.
  • Women who have an active infection anywhere within their body.

How much does a breast augmentation cost?

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons states that the average cost of a breast augmentation was $3,543 in the year 2012. However, this fee does not include the fee associated with an operating room facility or anesthesia costs. In many cases, the cost of a breast augmentation will vary depending on the surgeon’s experience, the type of the breast implants used and the geographic location of the surgeon’s office.

Other costs that could come up:

  • Medical tests.
  • Post-surgery garments.
  • Prescriptions for medication needed after surgery.
  • Surgeon’s fees.

Procedure involved in beast implants:

The first step in the breast implant process is implementing anesthesia. Types of anesthesia commonly used include general anesthesia and intravenous sedation.

The second step in the implant process is the incision. The plastic surgeon will make incisions in an inconspicuous region of the body to minimize visible scarring. There are various types of incisions used. They include the inframammary incision, which is on the bottom of the breasts, the transaxillary incision, which is under the arm, and the periareolar incision, which is near the nipple area. The type of incision used is based on what kind of implant is being inserted and the plastic surgeon’s and patient’s preference.

The next step in the process is the insertion of the breast implants into the body. Breast implants are either inserted behind the breast tissue and directly over the pectoral muscle or under the pectoral muscle.

The next step of the procedure is to close the incision. Usually, incisions are closed using layered sutures, surgical tape and skin adhesive.

Recovery from surgery:

In most cases, women are required to reduce their activity level for at least a few days after surgery. However, feeling soreness or experiencing swelling is common even weeks after the procedure. Each patient will be given specific instructions pertaining to their individual recovery process, and following the surgeon’s recommendations is wise in order to achieve the desired result.

Does insurance cover the cost of breast implants?

A breast augmentation surgery is often considered strictly cosmetic. Therefore, in most instances, patients will have to pay for the procedure on their own. However, most plastic surgeons offer financing options to patients thus making the elective surgery possible.

A successful breast augmentation will be long-lasting and enable women to wear different types of clothing or swimwear than they could wear before. In addition, many women who have undergone a breast augmentation surgery notice a boost in their self-confidence. Although the results of an augmentation are long-lasting, they are not permanent. In many cases, women will require an implant replacement within their lifetime.
