Who Is a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?
The best candidates for breast augmentation are women who are looking for improvement, not perfection, in the way they look. If a woman is physically healthy and realistic in her expectations, she may be a good candidate for this surgery. It is important to discuss your individual expectations regarding the change you seek in the shape and size of your breast with your doctor who will be able to consider the optimal surgical approach to satisfy your desired outcome. Breast augmentation may be a good option for you if you have at least one the following conditions or traits:
- you consider your breasts to be too small or under-developed
- you believe your figure is out of proportion due to small breasts and in turn, make your hips appear wider
- one or both breasts failed to develop normally, or have an unnatural, elongated shape
- you feel you have limited choices of flattering clothing or swim wear styles due to small breasts
- you are dissatisfied with your breasts losing shape and volume after pregnancy, weight loss, or with aging
- your breasts have asymmetry or vary in size or shape from one another
- you are unhappy with the upper part of the breast appearing empty
- you currently have breast implants, and are experiencing problems with them

How to prepare for surgery
When you meet with Dr. Liebscher, you get instructions to follow before your breast augmentation. This may include receiving a baseline mammogram before and after your breast augmentation. Doing so will help to identify any changes in your breast tissue.
Your surgeon will likely recommend that you avoid taking certain medications prior to your scheduled surgery. Specifically, you will need to avoid taking anti-inflammatory medications and aspirin as these can increase your risk of bleeding during surgery. Your surgeon will also give you additional instructions regarding medications.
If you smoke, you will be advised to stop smoking for an extended period of time. Since a breast augmentation is typically on outpatient procedure, you will need to have someone drive you home upon the completion of your surgery. You should also have someone stay with you for your first night home after the procedure.
Anesthesia and medications
You will be given medications to ensure that you are comfortable during your surgery. Intravenous sedation and local anesthesia are commonly used during a breast augmentation. General anesthesia may be given to some patients.
Procedure length of time
It will take your cosmetic surgeon between one and three hours to complete your breast augmentation. A variety of factors will determine the length of time, such as the type of implant that is placed, the technique used and the type of anesthesia you receive. Your cosmetic surgeon will discuss this with you during your consultation.
Recovery time
Before you are discharged and allowed to go home, Dr. Liebscher will give you specific recovery instructions. Be sure to follow them to best ensure a normal recovery. After your surgery is completed, your breasts will be wrapped in a surgical bra or gauze dressings. Surgical dressings will be removed after a few days. You will need to wear a support bra afterwards. If drains have been placed, you must follow your surgeon’s instructions on how to care for and empty them. These will be removed during your first postoperative visit.
It is normal for your breasts to be discolored and swollen immediately after surgery. Swelling will gradually dissipate over a month’s time and the discoloration will fade quickly. For the first two to five days after your surgery, you can expect your chest to be stiff and sore, and your breasts may feel sensitive, warm or itchy.
Raising your arms may be difficult temporarily. You will want to avoid any strenuous activity for several weeks. This includes twisting your upper body or pushing, pulling or lifting any objects. After you resume your normal physical activities, you must still be gentle with your breasts for at least one more month.
Although you should avoid strenuous activity, it is essential that you frequently walk around for several minutes every few hours. This greatly reduces your risk of developing blood clots in your legs. Depending on the type of job you have, you may return to work within several days to a week.
